Surviving the party buffet

So, it’s “that” time of year. Time for getting together with family and friends to celebrate Christmas and other seasonal holidays. What do you think of this time of year? Family and friends, Santa, giving of your self and money to help those who have less, the New Year coming up quickly?  Well, we probably think of all those things and more. Including FOOD? Yup, many of us do. We either look forward to parties or we dread them because of a lack of self control at the buffet. Well, dread no longer. I hereby grant you permission to cheat at the parties.  OK, wait wait wait a minute! I didn’t say GORGE YOURSELF until you throw up,.  Cheat, meaning just a bit. OK, more than a bit but less than a gorge-fest.

So, here’s a little about my struggles.  When it comes to over indulging, my weakness is sweets. I can resist chips, appetizers, snack foods, alcohol, egg nog, etc. But put a table of cookies, cake, tarts, pie etc in front of me, and well, you better not stick your hand in there because it might get bitten off. So,

Here is a strategy I’m going to employ this season.  Drink a lot of water before you go to the party, then start off with the healthy items, veggies, fruit, whole grains when they’re available. I find it easiest to stay in control when I first arrive. So, if I can start the party off with healthy foods and fill up a bit, I will likely eat less junk food later on in the evening when self control is lacking.

Now, if you DO over indulge to the max, don’t beat yourself up over it. It happens, especially this time of year. It’s almost part of our traditions, right? Yes, of course I’m right.  So, just wake up the next morning and have a healthy breakfast with your coffee and Tylenol, and vow to do really well until the next party or dinner.  Come New Years Day you will be pleasantly surprised at how much weight you DIDN’T gain this season. By letting yourself enjoy some treats, I think, you’ll be less likely to over do it.

So, go out and enjoy yourself with Holiday Season with your family and friends. That’s what life is all about!
