Today’s topic is smoothies! They can be a great way to sneak in an extra serving or two of fruits and VEGGIES! It’s important to make sure you’re not just adding this to your day, or else you can easily go over your calorie needs. I like to use them in the mornings. I’m not a huge fan of eating in the morning, so a smoothie is a great way for me to get something healthy in my body and get through to lunch. I try to get a vegetable in every smoothie. Vegetables help slow down the insulin spike from the fruit. I like using okra, spinach, kale, celery. Mostly I use okra. YES, I promise it’s not gross. You really can’t even taste it. Speaking of taste, up the flavor by using extracts. They now make extract in every imaginable flavor, peppermint, maple, strawberry, orange, coconut…the list goes on and on. If you can’t find them in your grocery store, order them online at Amazon or Walmart. They will transform a blah smoothie into a WOW SMOOTHIE!
Also, don’t sweeten your smoothies with sugar or honey, that’s going to cause a sugar spike and crash. Instead, use a stevia sweetener. They come in liquid (which are awesome and cheap), powder, and granular. I only use granular for baking but the other two are fantastic for smoothies and ice tea etc.
